RE: Chesapeake Public Water Access

Dear Mr. Callanhan,

On behalf of the Virginia Coastal Access Now (VCAN) thank you for your continued efforts to promote and protect public access to Virginia’s coast.

VCAN is a nonprofit 501c3 organization established in 2006 to defend the public’s access to and the protection of Virginia coast. Our non-profit has and with your help continues to fight to preserve and enhance public access within Virginia’s coastal zone. We will make every effort to assist the City of Chesapeake to maintain existing and create new public access where possible.

The most critical public access issues in Chesapeake, VA right now are (1) having the Northwest River designated as a Virginia Scenic River, (2) restoring the Deep Creek Locks public access boat ramp, and (3) improving water access to Oak Grove City Park.

RE: Ft. Story Public Access

Captain Stuppard,

The public and visitors to Ft. Story continue to be denied access to First Landing (Inchon) Beach for aesthetic, historic, and recreational use.

Beach access that was once provided by the U.S. Army needs to be restored by the U.S. Navy. Our non-profit outlined workable solutions in our previous correspondence to this extent. We find it interesting the Navy can provide access for military personnel, base residents, and their guests to the beach while excluding those visiting the lighthouses and memorial right next to it? Of further interest is that a command instruction dated November 7th, 2011 is issued, in part, to restrict beach access during training activities. We also identified similar action, prohibiting beach access to the public during training activities, as a solution to keeping the beach open to visitors. Herein again we request implementation of this solution to restore beach access.
